中国将“失去”2008年奥运会吗?

当国际奥委会在2001年7月将2008年夏季奥运会的主办权授予北京时,整个国家都陷入欢腾之中。中国共产党希望用这次奥运会来展示这个国家已经成长为一个充满活力、现代化的国家。但是当中国的领导人正在为明年八月举办的奥运会作最后的准备时,他们也许正怀疑举办这样一次运动会到底是不是一个那么美妙的主意。他们很有理由要对此表示怀疑。

中国的高层领导人总是密切地监视公众自发表现出的民族主义狂热,担心转动的风向也许会发起针对他们的不受欢迎的风暴。他们希望的当然是奥运会能把这些能量引向民族的团结,从而使领导层能够给它的人民带去一个充满成就和爱国主义荣耀的时刻。

但是奥运会也会带来国际社会对正处于国家发展微妙阶段的中国的弱点的密切观察。世界已经了解到了中国的成功以及它对外商投资的吸引力,但是很少有外人能够亲眼看到这个国家为它新的繁荣所付出的高昂代价。
