正当过去一年土耳其国内政治斗争的硝烟刚刚开始散去时,库尔德分离主义者攻击土耳其军队导致多名军人死亡的事件使政府威胁要在伊拉克北部实施军队打击。这种前景给土耳其、伊拉克和美国都带来了巨大的风险。但是有理由怀疑形势是否真的像最近报纸大字标题上所写的那样危险。

土耳其谴责伊拉克库尔德地区藏匿了3000到3500名土耳其最最活跃的库尔德武装分子库尔德工人党分离主义者的游击队员,他们被指责在今年已经造成了80名土耳其军人死亡。这个问题在10月7日达到了沸点,当天库尔德武装分子在土耳其与伊拉克交界附近打死了13名土耳其军人。

土耳其公众要求采取行动,并且埃尔多安总理领导的政府也作出了反应。10月17日,尽管伊拉克和美国都呼吁保持耐心和克制,但是土耳其的立法者还是以507票赞成对19票反对授权埃尔多安在明年的任何时间下令越境进入伊拉克实施军事打击。
