随着美国的消费者们愈发购买有机的和当地生产的食品以及不是由在笼子里的鸡产下的鸡蛋,这一朝向更为符合伦理消费的运动在那里也取得了重大进展。在英国,一项调查显示,看到公平贸易标志的人有一半认识这一标志而且知道它指的是能够给第三世界的农民带来更多利益的产品。在美国并没有类似的研究,但是相关数据以及和我自己的学生们的讨论可以显示这一数字要低很多。

想要公平贸易认证的贸易商必须给生产者支付能够涵盖可持续生产成本并且提供生活必要工资的价格。例如,无论市场价格如何下跌,咖啡的最低价格都是每磅1.26美元。如果市场价格高于这一数字,那么,公平贸易的价格也将上升,高于市场价格每磅5分钱。
