¿Por qué no deberían dejarse los sueldos en el sector financiero al arbitrio del mercado?

CAMBRIGDE- Si bien, algunas firmas financieras están reformando la manera de remunerar a sus empleados, los gobiernos de todo el mundo están considerando seriamente regular las estructuras de compensación de dichas empresas. El Comité de Supervisión Bancaria de Basilea, recientemente se declaró a favor de esas regulaciones, y la Cámara de Representantes de los Estados Unidos ha aprobado exigir que las instancias reguladoras establezcan reglas sobre las compensaciones.

Tal vez no resulte sorprendente que muchos de los altos mandos del sector financiero se opongan enérgicamente a dichas acciones. Afirman que necesitan la libertad de crear paquetes de compensación para conservar a su personal más talentoso –los que reactivarán el sistema financiero mundial. Entonces, ¿deberían los gobiernos hacerse a un lado y dejar en manos de las firmas financieras sus propias reformas?

La respuesta es claramente no. En el orden financiero posterior a la crisis, los gobiernos deben asumir el papel de supervisores y reguladores de las retribuciones en las firmas financieras; de otro modo, los incentivos perversos que contribuyeron a crear la crisis actual podrían repetirse fácilmente.
