Plýtvání potravinami v hladovějícím světě

OTTAWA – Čtvrtina všech potravin na světě se každoročně promrhá kvůli neefektivní sklizni, neodpovídajícímu skladování a plýtvání v kuchyních. Kdybychom tyto ztráty snížili na polovinu, mohl by svět nasytit o miliardu lidí více – a problém hladu by se stal rázem minulostí.

Rozsah plýtvání potravinami je obzvláště skličující vzhledem k nové globální studii Organizace OSN pro výživu a zemědělství (FAO) o potravinové bezpečnosti. Podle FAO nesplnilo 57 rozvojových zemí rozvojový cíl tisíciletí snížit podíl hladovějících lidí do konce tohoto roku na polovinu. Každý devátý člověk na planetě stále chodí spát hladový – celkem je to 795 milionů lidí.

Samozřejmě bylo zároveň dosaženo pozoruhodného pokroku: za posledních 25 let nasytil svět další dvě miliardy osob a rozvojový svět jako celek – navzdory 57 neúspěchům – snížil podíl hladovějících lidí téměř na polovinu. Hlavním úkolem však bude tento pokrok udržet: do roku 2050 se poptávka po potravinách téměř zdvojnásobí. Jedním z důvodů je skutečnost, že svět bude muset do té doby nasytit další dvě miliardy osob; druhým důvodem pak bude rostoucí apetit stále početnější nové střední třídy.
