美国剑桥—几百年来,“吃啥变啥”的思想一直主宰着饮食理论。流行的解释很简单:我们的身体和我们所吃下去的食物一样,无非是一些化学物质。为了活得长、活得健康,为了使我们的潜能最大化,我们必须摄入正确的化学物质——也就是说,含有正确营养素的食物。不过,不久之前,这个说法有了不同的理解,表明我们对我们的饮食和我们自己的看法有了深远变化,而这一变化将对当前健康争论形成重大影响。

古希腊和古罗马医术都以预防为主。养生法——即通常所说的营养学——给出了一种为保持健康而设计的生活方式。事实上,医生使出浑身解数救治患病的病人,但营养学才被视为最重要的医学活动领域。毕竟,有了合理的营养,我们说不定永远都不需要去看医生。

营养学是一种方案,旨在让生活有序,指导人们不要光靠吃喝,而是利用生活中一切影响身体状况的可以控制的方式,包括选择住所、锻炼、睡眠习惯、排泄、性活动以及被当今医学所忽视的领域:情感控制。
