Las cruciales elecciones de Ucrania

La política de Ucrania no es la de la estepa. Nuestros votantes no pueden adoptar una dirección durante unas elecciones y la opuesta en la siguiente ocasión en que voten, sin preocuparse por caer al vacío. Los ucranianos son un pueblo de la cuenca: vivimos a uno u otro lado de una gran divisoria.

Hace un año, los ucranianos se atrevieron a explorar el territorio desconocido al otro lado de la cima y encontraron la democracia y la promesa de una economía más abierta y honrada, pero la democracia es complicada; como el Presidente Viktor Yushchenko ha aplazado algunas de las promesas de nuestra "revolución anaranjada" o ha renegado de ellas, existe la posibilidad de que el 26 de marzo, cuando los ucranianos voten para la elección de un nuevo Parlamento, opten, desilusionados, por volver al reino del gobierno autocrático y corrupto.

Las opciones –para mi país, para Rusia y para Europa– están claras. De las tres coaliciones electorales principales que se enfrentan, las fuerzas que apoyaron la "revolución anaranjada" aspiran a un futuro democrático y moderno para nuestro país. El otro bloque ofrece la certidumbre casi total de una vuelta a un aislamiento hosco y sórdido... tal vez el comienzo del fin de nuestra independencia, que tanto costó conseguir.
