لماذا تنتمي المملكة المتحدة إلى أوروبا

لندن ــ الآن، ربما يفصل بيننا وبين إجراء استفتاء على استمرار عضوية المملكة المتحدة في الاتحاد الأوروبي أقل من عام. وعندما يأتي الموعد فسوف يُطلَب من الناخبين أن يتخذوا قراراً خطيرا. فالقضية لا تدور حول علاقات المملكة المتحدة بجيرانها عبر القناة فحسب، بل وأيضاً مكانتها اللائقة على الساحة الدولية.

ومن حسن الحظ أن قِلة في البلاد هم من يؤيدون مفهوم "العزلة الرائعة" العتيق. وسواء ظلت المملكة المتحدة ــ وهي واحدة من أكثر بلدان العالم تطلعاً إلى الخارج ــ أو لم تظل في الاتحاد الأوروبي فإن العولمة تستبعد هذا الخيار.

فبدلاً من ذلك، يميل أنصار الانسحاب من الاتحاد الأوروبي إلى الارتداد إلى تنويعات مشربة بالحنين لماضي بريطانيا الإمبراطوري ــ وأبرزها الفكرة الضبابية الغامضة المتمثلة في "المجال الإنجليزي"، وهو المفهوم الذي يقوم على فكرة ونستون تشرشل للوحدة بين "الشعوب الناطقة باللغة الإنجليزية". ووفقاً لهذه الحجة، فبدلاً من التجارة مع الاتحاد الأوروبي المتصلب المستغرق في الذات، من الأفضل كثيراً تشكيل شراكات ثنائية مع بلدان مثل أستراليا، ونيوزيلندا، وكندا، والولايات المتحدة، والهند.
