Schulen der Hoffnung

LONDON – Der heutige 20. Juni ist Weltflüchtlingstag – der Tag, an dem wir die Kraft und den Mut derjenigen würdigen, die gezwungen sind, aus ihrer Heimat zu fliehen. Ich denke dabei an Mohammed, einen syrischen Flüchtling, den ich traf, als ich im vergangenen Monat die Istoc-Grundschule in der Türkei besuchte.

In dieser geschäftigen Schule, die bereits aus den Nähten platzt, um der großen örtlichen Bevölkerung Rechnung zu tragen, beobachtete ich Mohammed auf seinem Platz hinten in der Klasse, wie er sich bemühte, ein Kunstprojekt fertigzustellen. Die Klasse war dabei, Kunstobjekte aus Museen zu zeichnen, und es gab eine lebhafte Diskussion über die Wichtigkeit, Kulturgüter und das kulturelle Erbe zu bewahren.

Mohammed unterbrach seine Arbeit, um zu erklären, wie seine Klassenkameraden ihm beim Erlernen des Türkischen geholfen hätten und wie er nach der Flucht aus seinem kriegsverheerten Land und der Ansiedlung in Istanbul nun dabei sei, den Lehrstoff aufzuholen. Sein Traum jedoch ist es, eines Tages die Chance auf eine Rückkehr nach Hause zu erhalten, und er ist entschlossen, fleißig zu lernen, um die Kenntnisse und Fertigkeiten zu erwerben, sich dort eine neue Zukunft aufzubauen.
