据说,最好的新闻作品总能预见历史,那么安德鲁•罗斯•索尔金所著的《太大而不能倒》显然有获得这一殊荣的资格。在他描绘的种种重大事件中,我也是当事人(我兼任摩根斯坦利的独立董事),因此我可以断定,他准确地捕捉到了2008年秋笼罩在纽约上空混乱不断、前途未卜的阴霾。

有一段时间,金融系统似乎到了四分五裂的境地。人们发现从前与“直布罗陀巨岩”一样坚挺的金融机构到头来却是一座座冒烟的火山,随时有可能顷刻化为废墟。高盛集团正是依靠美联储的鼎力相助才苟延残喘。而在大西洋的另一岸,英国政府却因拥有皇家苏格兰银行超过80%的股份而沾沾自喜,因为该银行在某种程度上一度是世界上最大的银行。
