つい最近、少なくともヨーロッパには、もはやタブーは無くなったと断定した者もいるかもしれない。啓蒙をもって始まったプロセスは今や、「何でも来い」という段階に到達した。 特に芸術分野において、前世代ならば非常に不快とされたであろうことさえも、それを見せることにはっきりとした限度はなかった。

2世代前、たいていの国には、特定の映画を青少年が見るのを防ごうと努めるだけでなく、実際に本を禁止した検閲官がいた。1960年代以降、このような禁止は弱まり、結局、 明白な性的関心、暴力、 神への冒涜 – 不快に感じる人がいる 一方で – 啓蒙された世界の一部として寛容に見られるまでになった。

いや、そうだっただろうか?本当に、限度はないのか?ヨーロッパ圏外で、 「何でも来い」の姿勢が完全に受け入れられたことは今までない。そしてヨーロッパにおいても、限度はあったのだ。歴史家デビッド・アービング は、ホロコースト否認の罪で未だオーストリアで拘留されている。これは、確かに、特別な例である。はっきり記録された真実の否定は、新たな犯罪につながるかもしれない。しかし昔からの「真実は何か」という質問に対する答えは、常にこれほど明らかだろうか?
