墨尔本-路易斯·布朗,人体外受精而诞生的第一人,去年满30了 。“试管婴儿” 的诞生,那时的头条新闻中所称为的体外受精,在当时是是极具争议性的。后来担任小布什政府的生物伦理理事会主席的莱昂·卡斯,由于体外受精认为产生不正常的婴儿的风险过于大,所以对其的尝试无论如何是不能被证明是有理的。一些宗教领袖也谴责利用现代科学技术来取代性交,他们认为即使在不会导致受孕的情况下也不行。

自那时以来,约有300万人已通过体外受精诞生,使不孕夫妇有了他们渴望的孩子。通过体外受精而生出异常孩子的风险概率不会大于年纪相仿的父母通过性交怀孕而出生的孩子。然而,由于为了增加的怀孕可能性,许多体外受精的的从业人员一次将两个或三个胚胎移入母亲体内,因此双胞胎和多胞胎的现象就更为普遍,也并带来了更多风险。

罗马天主教会仍然没有改变反对体外受精的立场。在最近发布的“人性尊严”的指示里,教会圣座教义反对体外受精的几个理由,其中包括了因为许多胚胎在这一过程中诞生但却少有生存这一事实。但是,这个结果和自然受孕并没有什么大不相同,大多数因性交而受孕的胚胎也并未能成功地植入子宫壁,往往造成一些妇女甚至更本没有意识到她曾“怀孕 ”过
