纽约—总统竞选辩论的要点是什么?在美国总统大选中,“辩论”其实有用词不当的嫌疑。法国前总统萨科齐面对其社会党挑战者奥朗德,这叫辩论——辩实质性问题,论超过两小时。相反,美国总统竞选辩论更像是舞台演出,对于每一个可能出现的问题,指导和顾问团队都早已经演练过无数次了。

美国总统辩论会精心挑选与会记者,他们都不会在一个问题上刨根问底。候选人表现如何,也不会根据其观点是否具有实质内容决定,而是根据其演说、其肢体语言、其面部表情、其不经意的叹息、微笑、冷嘲和无意中的眼部动作决定。候选人看起来像是势利小人还是可以信赖的朋友?他的微笑是真诚的还是虚伪的?

这些“现象”可以具有极大的重要性。毕竟,据说尼克松在1960年输给肯尼迪的原因就是败在了电视上:肯尼迪看起来又酷又帅,而尼克松在镜头前摆出一副苦瓜脸,胡渣满脸,不停地流汗。在1980年的竞选辩论中,卡特一副缺少幽默感的书呆子相,而里根看起来像是位面善大叔。结果卡特败下阵来。
