人们都说巴基斯坦的政治权力来自三个“A”:安拉(Allah)、军队(Army)和美国(America)的支持。但是只有军队的领导层拥有最明显的手段能帮这个国家除掉穆沙拉夫——穿军装的巴基斯坦总统。而这也是任何与前总理贝布托的权力分享协议不太可能终结巴基斯坦的政治动乱的原因所在。

穆沙拉夫希望能在今年秋天后延长他的总统任期,同时不必屈服于反对派的要求辞去他在军方的职务以及让一位文职的竞争对手来担任总理职务。但是世界上很少有其他领导人像他这样面对如此广泛、立场坚定的国内敌人。

自从在1999年通过一场政变获得权力后,穆沙拉夫至少已经躲过了三次严重的暗伤图谋。甚至在他的政府七月份冲进伊斯兰堡的红色清真寺,杀死超过100人之前,他与美国的反恐合作就已经致命地削弱了他与巴基斯坦宗教保守势力的政治联盟。国内恐怖袭击的威胁将持续高涨。
