هل علينا موسم الأعياد وحان وقت اللهو والابتهاج ، وهو عادة ما يكون وقت الإكثار من تناول الطعام. لكن الإفراط في استهلاك السكريات والذي يميز هذا الوقت من السنة، ليس بالأمر الذي يستحق الاحتفال.

والحقيقة أن هذا الارتفاع الموسمي المفاجئ في استهلاك السكر لا يشكل سوى جزء من تحول ضخم يعترى الصحة العالمية الآن. وتواجه العديد من الدول، والدول النامية على نحو خاص، عواقب التغييرات الهائلة التي طرأت على أسلوب الحياة: تعديلات في الأنظمة الغذائية، وانخفاض مستويات ممارسة الأنشطة البدنية، وزيادة في استهلاك التبغ.
