نيويورك ــ قبل فترة طويلة، كنت أتولى إدارة مؤتمر بعنوان منتدى الكمبيوتر الشخصي. وكان الناس يقولون لي: "أتمنى لو أستطيع أن أجلس بجانب بل جيتس...". وقبل أسبوع فقط، سحبني صديق جانباً في أحد المؤتمرات لطلب المشورة. سألني: "ما هي أفضل طريقة لجعل المؤتمرات أكثر فعالية لمقابلة الناس؟ إن الأمر كالتسويق تماما، ويبدو أن فعالية المؤتمرات لا تتجاوز 50%".

الواقع أنه طرح عليّ السؤال الخطأ. فالتفاعل في هذه السياق لابد أن يكون ذا اتجاهين: فهل يرغب الناس حقاً في مقابلته؟

إن المؤتمر المصمم خصيصاً لمساعدة صديقي قد يفشل، لأن الناس الذين يريد الجميع مقابلتهم من غير المرجح أن يظهروا. وهل لدى صديقي الحق في استغلال وقتهم؟ لقد أخبرني أنه جلس بالفعل في مجموعة مناقشة منفصلة مع عشرين شخصية، وكان يريد مقابلة كلاً منهم، ولكنه تمكن من الحديث مع اثنين فقط. وقد أثار هذا انزعاجي بعض الشيء. فهل هذا الشخص الذي أحاول مساعدته متطفل على الناس في حقيقية الأمر؟
