女性割礼的隐秘世界

内罗毕——小时候在肯尼亚,我是女性生殖器切割的秘密崇拜者。朋友和老人们有关女孩子一旦接受“割礼”,就可以赢得人们的尊重且成年男性就会认为她适合结婚的说法影响了我。也许这些可以解释为什么作为一个13岁的女孩子,我渴望经受“割礼”并成为一个“真正的女人”。

但我母亲反对这种做法,因为她曾经是(现在也依然是)一名基督教徒,她希望我能接受教育并逃过我们那里许多女孩子嫁给大龄男人然后失去自主权的命运。我试图说服妈妈允许我接受割礼,可是她拒绝了。

我母亲的决定激怒了我。在沮丧中,我跟其它几位学校女生说起这件事。她们每个人对割礼过程的描述都不尽相同,但她们都同意一个观点:那就是割礼的过程极其痛苦,而我必须做好流很多血的准备。但与我交谈的朋友们都鼓励我接受割礼。
