El hidrógeno como solución

RHINECLIFF, NUEVA YORK – En todo el mundo, se insta a gobiernos y empresas a realizar inversiones grandes en energía solar, eólica y geotérmica, así como en biocombustibles. No obstante, en los Estados Unidos, a diferencia de Europa y Asia, prácticamente no se habla de la energía del hidrógeno y las células de combustible como tecnologías sistémicas innovadoras. Eso necesita cambiar: estas fuentes de energía renovables limpias no solo garantizan el diseño de centrales de cero emisiones, sino también combustibles de cero emisiones para autos y camiones, que son los más contaminantes de todos.

Hasta ahora, muchos hemos escuchado los planes de los grandes fabricantes de autos –incluidos Honda, Toyota y Hyundai– de lanzar comercialmente autos a base de células de combustible para aproximadamente 2015. Daimler, Ford y Nissan lo harán para 2017. Alemania tiene proyectado construir al menos 50 estaciones de combustible de hidrógeno para 2015 como primer paso de una red en todo el país. Japón y Corea han anunciado planes similares.

Aunque el mensaje más amplio que no ­se ha reportado es que algunos países europeos, especialmente Alemania, han lanzado proyectos que combinan energías renovables como la solar y la eólica con hidrógeno para almacenar energía, lo que supone redes eléctricas estables sin emisiones que no necesitan carbón, petróleo ni energía nuclear.
