РАЙНКЛИФФ, штат НЬЮ-ЙОРК – Правительства и бизнесмены по всему миру постоянно призываются делать больше инвестиций в солнечную, ветровую и геотермальную энергию, а также в биотопливо. Однако в Соединенных Штатах, в отличие от Европы и Азии, обсуждение водородной энергетики и топливных элементов в системных масштабах как революционного решения для энергетики практически отсутствует. Это необходимо изменить: эти чистые, возобновляемые источники энергии обещают не только снабжение основных потребителей электроэнергии при нулевом уровне загрязняющих выбросов, но и чистое топливо для легковых и грузовых автомобилей – крупнейших загрязнителей.

В настоящее время многие слышали о планах больших автопроизводителей – в том числе Honda, Toyota и Hyundai – запустить производство автомобилей на водородных топливных элементах в коммерческих масштабах к 2015 году. Daimler, Ford и Nissan планируют выпустить подобные автомобили к 2017 году. Германия планирует построить по меньшей мере 50 водородных заправочных станций к 2015 году, тем самым заложив основу для сети, покрывающей всю страну. Япония и Корея объявили об аналогичных планах.

Однако еще более значимым, хотя и менее освещенным посланием является то, что некоторые европейские страны, особенно Германия, запустили программы, которые сочетают возобновляемые источники энергии, такие как солнечная и ветровая энергия, с водородным механизмом ее хранения, что сделает возможным создание чистых и стабильных электросетей с нулевым уровнем выбросов, которые не требуют угля, нефти или ядерной энергии.
