La Soluzione all’Idrogeno

RHINECLIFF, NY – In tutto il mondo, i governi e le imprese sono costantemente chiamati a fare grandi investimenti in energia solare, eolica, geotermica, così come in biocarburanti. Ma, negli Stati Uniti, a differenza in Europa e in Asia, la discussione sull’energia a idrogeno e sulle celle a combustibile, in quanto tecnologie sistemiche, che cambierebbero le regole del gioco, è in gran parte assente. Questo deve cambiare: queste fonti energetiche pulite e rinnovabili promettono non solo un’energia di base a emissioni-zero, ma anche un carburante per auto e camion, i maggiori inquinatori di tutti, a emissioni-zero.

A questo punto, molti hanno sentito parlare dei progetti delle grandi case automobilistiche - tra cui Honda, Toyota e Hyundai - per il lancio in commercio delle auto che funzionano a celle a combustibile di idrogeno intorno al 2015. Daimler, Ford, e Nissan prevedono di lanciare tali vetture intorno a 2017. La Germania progetta di costruire almeno 50 stazioni di rifornimento di idrogeno entro il 2015 ed anche l'inizio di una rete nazionale. Giappone e Corea hanno annunciato piani simili.

Ma un messaggio più importante, di gran lunga non abbastanza riportato, è che alcuni paesi europei, in particolare la Germania, hanno avviato progetti che combinano le energie rinnovabili come il solare e l'eolico con l’idrogeno, rendendo possibile lo stoccaggio dell'energia; ciò implica reti elettriche stabili, pulite, a emissioni zero, che non richiedono né’ petrolio, né’ carbone, né’ nucleare.
