Die andere palästinensische Revolution

Die Euphorie, mit der man die Wahl Mahmud Abbas’ zum Präsidenten der Palästinensischen Behörde über eine Woche begrüßte, war möglicherweise gerechtfertigt. Jetzt ist es allerdings Zeit für eine umsichtige Beurteilung dessen, was den Palästinensern, Israelis und, vielleicht am wichtigsten, der arabischen Welt insgesamt, bevorsteht.

Für eine derartige Beurteilung gilt es zu erkennen, dass die Wahl durchaus ihre Mängel aufwies: Die Hamas und der Islamische Jihad boykottierten den Wahlgang. Marwan Barghouti, ebenso wie Abbas ein Mitglied der Fatah und der einzige Kandidat, der neben Abbas ernsthafte Siegeschancen hatte, wurde von der Führung der Bewegung unsanft gedrängt, seine Kandidatur zurückzuziehen, um den Eindruck einer einheitlichen Front nicht zu stören.

Überdies gelang es Abbas (auch als Abu Mazen bekannt) die ungefähr ein Dutzend palästinensischen Sicherheitsdienste und Milizen unter seine Kontrolle zu bringen. Das garantierte ihm den Sieg, obwohl die Aufmärsche von Gewehr schwingenden Männern bei seinen Wahlveranstaltungen nicht gerade das waren, was demokratische Normen verlangen.
