La nueva frontera farmacéutica

SINGAPUR – Ha sido un decenio muy difícil para la industria farmacéutica. Con la expiración de gran número de patentes, la sequía de nuevos productos y la intensificación de la competencia que les hacen los genéricos, las compañías farmacéuticas han padecido una hemorragia de valor.

Al mismo tiempo, los mercados tradicionales están empezando a quedar saturados. Fenómenos duros en los países industrializados –como, por ejemplo, las repercusiones de las poblaciones de edad en los modelos de asistencia de salud financiados por los empleadores y basados en los impuestos– están moviendo a los gobiernos a adoptar regímenes reguladores que exigen una fijación de precios más económica, basada en el valor y transparente.

En esas circunstancias, los mercados en ascenso representan una nueva frontera. Los países en desarrollo, originalmente atractivos para ofrecer una producción poco costosa,amp#160; representan ahora un mercado viable para las empresas multinacionales. La industria farmacéutica lleva un tiempo observando esa tendencia. Un estudio reciente predice que las ventas en 17 países con mercados farmacéuticos en ascenso –entre otros, la India, Indonesia, el Pakistán, Tailandia y Vietnam– “aumentaránamp#160; en conjunto en 90.000 millones de dólares durante el período 2009-2013”.
