有一天晚上,我与耶鲁国际研究员们共进晚餐,那是一群仔细选拔出来的职业人士,他们代表着世界上的各个大国, 在这里从事一个学期的研究。那是一种特殊的经历,因为我没有觉得这其中哪个人真的很陌生。比起等候我们进餐以及服侍我们的当地美国人,他们好像更加容易交流。

当然,国际性阶层并不是什么新鲜事。事实上,50年前,已故社会学家罗伯特·莫顿(Robert K. Merton)在他的代表作《 社会理论和社会结构 》中便描述了他在一个典型的美国小镇——新泽西的Rovere——对一群有影响力的人士所做的个案研究。作为社会学家,他选择这个小镇来研究人与人之间的联系和影响,如同生物学家研究小虫子时用几百个巢室来研究每个巢室与整体的联系。
