La construcción de un asesinato en Pakistán

El asesinato de Benazir Bhutto, la primera mujer musulmana en liderar un país musulmán, es un golpe duro para las perspectivas de democracia de Pakistán y, de hecho, su viabilidad como Estado. Mientras ceden el caos y la confusión, no deberíamos perder de vista la responsabilidad parcial del presidente Pervez Musharraf en este giro de los acontecimientos. Cuanto menos, no se lo puede absolver del fracaso de su gobierno a la hora de ofrecerle a Bhutto una seguridad adecuada.

Bhutto, en cambio, tuvo que pagar con su vida por desafiar con valentía a los extremistas de toda índole -desde Al Qaeda y los talibanes hasta los partidos políticos religiosos y los militares de línea dura del país.

Como heredera de Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, el legendario líder democrático que fue colgado por el gobierno del general Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq en 1979, Benazir se perfiló como símbolo de resistencia a temprana edad -pero languideció en cárceles y en el exilio en los años 1980-. El legado de Z.A. Bhutto fue darle poder a los pobres y defender los derechos de la gente común en un contexto de política feudal y régimen militar. En lugar de doblegarse ante la junta militar, aceptó el cadalso.
