La identidad islámica

Actualmente, a donde sea que volteemos, se utiliza al Islam (y se abusa de él) como fuerza política. Algunos musulmanes lo emplean como llamado a actuar; muchos en el Occidente (y en otros lugares) lo perciben como un "otro" al que hay que contener y excluir. Como turca, yo experimento directamente ambos lados de ese debate.

La razón por la que el Islam parece a ojos de los occidentales una religión de lo "otro" es que en Occidente se ha dado una desinstitucionalización sistemática de la religión. Por supuesto, no es la religión lo que ha desaparecido de la vida moderna occidental, sino lo que pueden hacer las instituciones religiosas sobre el comportamiento individual. La religión en el mundo moderno es una experiencia mucho más personal y espiritual que nunca.

Sin embargo, también en el Islam se está dando un proceso de desinstitucionalización de la experiencia religiosa. La politización del Islam está sustituyendo la autoridad de la clase religiosa, la ulema . Al igual que en Occidente, la experiencia religiosa islámica se está volviendo más personal. Uno de los resultados es la interpretación de los textos religiosos a título personal que están haciendo los musulmanes, incluyendo a militantes políticos, intelectuales y mujeres. Otro, es la vulgarización del conocimiento religioso, que abusa de las enseñanzas del Corán y las saca de contexto para apoyar fines políticos.
