目前,世界上高收入国家的预期寿命是78岁,最不发达国家是51岁,而某些艾滋病肆虐的非洲国家只有40岁。富有国家每1000名出生的婴儿中有7个在5岁以前死亡;而在最为贫穷的国家里,每1000名出生的婴儿有155个在5岁以前死亡。

这不仅仅是人类的悲剧,而且也是经济发展的灾难,因为这在体制上降低经济增长并且使得最贫苦国家无法摆脱贫困。但是,全球越来越多的项目正在证明,可以通过在公共医疗项目上有的放矢的投资来大幅度降低穷人的死亡和疾病。

近年来,通过全球抗击艾滋病、肺结核以及霍乱基金取得了巨大的胜利。这个基金建立于六年以前,已经向130多个国家提供融资来强化它们的抗击这三种致命疾病项目。从那时以来,全球基金项目已经帮助了大约1亿非洲人接受了抗逆转录病毒药物来治疗艾滋病,提供资金分发了大约3000万顶蚊帐来抗击霍乱,并且为治疗大约2百万肺结核病人提供了支持。
