偉人シンドローム

このグローバル化の時代において、物事の決定権は莫大かつ非人間的な力が握っているとされる。グローバル化した市場、拘束のない貿易、武装化したイスラム、中国の覚醒:通常、歴史家や戦略家たちは、これらの主要な力が我々の運命を形作っていると描写する。しかし、たいていの人の考え方は違っている。

たいていの人は、代わりに、歴史を動かすのは「偉人」、つまり政治ビジョンや人格のカリスマ性、道徳的主張の影響力を通して物事を推し進める男(そして女)であると、未だに本能的に捉えている。そういう人物が、信念と人格という目に見えない力で、とかく孤立し非人間的な世界にかすかな望みをもたらし成功すると、我々の多くが信じているのだ。

このようなグローバル化時代におけるカリスマ性を持った男または女への切望は、少なくとも三つの要素に起因する。第一の要素は、この世界の複雑さと傷つきやすさ。第二の要素は、逆説的ではあるが、政治と政治家に対する皮肉癖(cynicism)の強まりを反映している。そして第三の要素は、メディア文化によって、物事に「顔」をつけることに取り付かれていることである。
