盖茨眼中的福音

比尔·盖茨和埃伦·巴菲特名列美国富豪第一和第二,可能也是全球富豪前两名。他们时常被人说成是卡内基著名的1889年“财富的福音”一文的崇拜者。卡内基的这篇论文是美国经典之作。它认为大量财富可以导向慈善捐款的善举以及对艺术和科学的支持,因而为资本主义所趋向创造的财富集中提供道义上的理由。简而言之,卡内基认为,巨大的个人财富导致伟大的文明。

“财富的福音”一文是建立在导致“适者生存”的商业竞争的前提之上。所谓适者,就是那些具备最佳“组织才能”的人。卡内基认为,那些在商界脱颖而出并获得巨大个人财富的人比别人更加能够判断世界的运转方式以及应当将资源导向哪里。卡内基认为,成功人士是应当在他们仍然具备那些才能的时候从商界引退,并且把他们的余生致力于为慈善事业散财。

卡内基还支持设立遗产税作为一种激励。他为此解释说,这将“引导富人们注意在世的时候管理财富”。卡内基认为,鼓励富人们在世的时候把他们的钱财花在良好的事业上要比把其财富交给他们(可能才能平平的)子女管理好得多。
