对于那些侥幸活下来的人来讲,未来也显得异常残酷:所有研究结果都显示,在出生后头两年营养不良的儿童终其一生都会受到健康问题的困扰,而且各项发展都会相对滞后。营养不良影响了他们学习、适应工作和发展才华的能力。除人类所遭受的痛苦之外,营养不良所带来的经济成本也令人瞠目:世界银行的调查显示,营养不良最为普遍的国家平均会丧失百分之二到百分之三的国内生产总值。

突然发生的严重影响不良并不是问题的关键,这种营养不良通常会在冲突发生后突如其来地给人们造成影响。问题的关键在于我们应该如何把欧盟和八国集团的注意力吸引到专家所谓的“隐性饥饿”上来。全世界每三个人中就有一个人受到隐性饥饿的困扰。隐性饥饿是由营养不平衡或者缺乏某种维他命及人体必需的矿物质所导致的,这些元素让人体能够正常生长,并确保人体能够完成重要的生理功能。
