O Fim da Fome e da Subnutrição

ROMA – Por vezes acontece algo que pode ter um grande impacto sobre a humanidade, mas que na altura passa em grande parte despercebido. Um desses momentos aconteceu na sexta-feira dia 7 de dezembro em Roma. O Conselho da Organização das Nações Unidas para a Alimentação e a Agricultura (FAO), decidiu que o objetivo da FAO não deve ser simplesmente reduzir a fome, mas sim erradicar a fome, a insegurança alimentar e a subnutrição. O próximo passo é que esta mudança seja confirmada pela Conferência da FAO em junho de 2013, que conta com a participação de todos os países membros da Organização.

Para muitos, esta pequena mudança de palavras pode parecer trivial. Os críticos também argumentam que a adoção de um objetivo sem definir uma data para a sua realização não tem grande significado. Outros podem até dizer que a ideia de erradicar a fome não faz sentido, porque nos faltam os meios para fazê-lo.

Durante os últimos 12 anos, o Objetivo de Desenvolvimento do Milénio (ODM) de reduzir para metade a fome até 2015 tem sido o principal motor da redução da fome. A proporção de pessoas com fome nos países em desenvolvimento diminuiu significativamente – de 23,2% em 1990-92 para 14,9% atualmente. No entanto, esse declínio deve-se mais ao aumento da população mundial do que à ligeira redução do número real de pessoas com fome, de cerca de 980 para 852 milhões.
