SAN FRANCISCO – L’histoire est jonchée de technologies ayant à l’occasion été acclamées comme la panacée universelle. Cela peut devenir agaçant pour les consommateurs lorsqu’ils réalisent que, disons, la chaine stéréo quadriphonique qu’ils viennent d’acquérir est un gaspillage d’argent. Mais lorsque les entreprises font le pari de mauvaises technologies, les conséquences peuvent être terribles pour elles.

Vers la fin des années 90, par exemple, on pensait que les échanges B2B allaient devenir « l’appli massue » pour le commerce, et près de 1500 d’entre elles ont été crées. La plupart ont depuis disparu, engloutissant des milliards de dollars d’investissements.

Pour contribuer à contrer le battage médiatique qui entoure l’arrivée de presque toutes les technologies, le McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) a étudié plus d’une centaine de technologies à évolution rapide et en a identifié douze qui devraient certainement perturber le statu quo dans les années à venir. Le MGI estime que l’impact annuel combiné de cette « douzaine perturbatrice » – dans des domaines tels que les technologies de l’information, les machines et les véhicules, l’énergie, les biosciences, et les matériaux – devrait représenter 1400 à 3300 milliards de dollars en 2025. Une grande part de cette valeur – et dans de nombreux cas, une majorité substantielle – profitera aux consommateurs.
