布鲁塞尔——二十五年后欧洲人会是什么样子?欧洲不同于美国,那个国家被誉为“熔炉”的历史已经赋予了每个人真正的多民族特色,而土生土长的欧洲人作为一个群体正面临着日益临近的威胁。欧洲迫切需要移民,但却没有做好欢迎移民的心理准备。因此今后几十年中欧洲的社会变化或许比其他地方都大,尽管这种变化的性质现在还不甚清晰。

乍看上去,欧洲目前争论的焦点大都集中在政治和经济融合领域——也就是有关欧洲的民族国家应该以什么样的力度来透过欧盟集中共享资源和主权的问题。但在显而易见的外表下面,真正引发担心的却是移民问题,是对民族“文化”受到异族流入威胁的深深恐惧,无论这些异族是不是白人。

欧洲今天的移民比率甚至把美国甩在了后面,每年官方许可进入欧洲的移民数量高达200万人,此外还有数量不明的非法移民。根据欧盟统计机构欧洲统计局最为保守的估计,从现在起到2050年止新到移民的总数约为4000万人。不可避免的是,如此量级的人员流动将可以确保欧洲已经喧嚣不堪的右翼极端政客得到更大的支持。
