信任的消亡

曼谷——一位朋友最近问了一个似乎很天真的问题:“什么是货币?我怎么知道该不该相信它是否真抵得上票面价值?”我们在经济学导论中学到过货币是交换的介质。但我们为什么接受这种说法?纸币充其量不过是上面标有数字的纸张而已。

我们相信纸币,因为政府说100是100,而不是10或50的时候我们所有人都决定信任政府。因此,货币的本质就是信任,缺少了这种信任社会就将陷入瘫痪的境地。

正如我们因为信任领袖的判断而遵从他们的命令去作战和献身一样,我们也把自己的前途和财富托付给了花旗集团、高盛和其他此类银行的经营者,理由是我们相信它们的领导者能公平地对待员工和客户,并能在自身的商业行为中遵从诚实守信的原则。我们从小到大都不希望与无赖和骗子为伍。
