La muerte de la muerte

Una vez más se ha matado a gran escala, esta vez en una tierra donde se dice que un día estuvo el paraíso, el valle entre los ríos Tigris y Éufrates. Las matanzas de hoy no son peores que las incontables masacres de la historia, y quizás estuvieron más acotadas. Algunos dicen que fueron necesarias para prevenir futuras matanzas. En cualquier caso, matar a nuestros semejantes conscientemente, así como el cometer suicidio, es un triste y solitario privilegio de los seres humanos.

Podemos suponer con razón que esto es así porque los humanos son los únicos seres que entienden la muerte, tanto la de otros como la propia. Todos sabemos que moriremos un día. "Eres un ser entre muchos/Sólo tú te aferras a la Belleza/Y debes saberlo: tienes que partir", escribió el poeta Reiner Kunze. Esta conciencia penetra cada momento de nuestras vidas. Media in vita in morte sumus (en el medio de la vida estamos rodeados por la muerte), decía una canción medieval. Heidegger hizo del conocimiento de la muerte la clave para comprender lo que significa vivir.

La muerte aísla a toda persona, ya que la muerte colectiva no existe. Cada uno muere solo. Quienes se dan cuenta de ellos están tentados a negar todo significado a la conducta humana; pareciera que todo fuera fútil a fin de cuentas, ya que al morir dejamos a la sociedad y la sociedad nos deja a nosotros. Por otra parte, sólo la conciencia de nuestra condición de mortales hace que nuestra existencia nos resulte tan preciosa. Si no muriéramos, todo perdería sentido. Todo lo que hacemos hoy lo podríamos hacer mañana.
