丘吉尔的半身像之争

20世纪60年代后,白宫的椭圆形办公室中一直摆放着英国首相的青铜像。奥巴马当选总统后把它换成了亚伯拉罕·林肯的半身像。奥巴马在11月竞选中的共和党对手米特·罗姆尼发誓如果自己赢得竞选就要重新摆放丘吉尔的半身像。之后一位白宫发言人表示,半身像仍然放在白宫,只不过更换了房间而已,于是事情再次发生了变化:显然有两座丘吉尔的半身像;一座仍然摆放在白宫,而另一座被奥巴马送回了英国大使馆。

为什么会有人在意这个问题?两名米特·罗姆尼的顾问对此做出了解答,称他们的候选人因为共同的“盎格鲁-萨克逊传统”而特别注重与英国的“特殊关系”。他们称现任总统并未充分“重视”这种关系。
