La silenciosa revolución feminista del mundo árabe

MADRID – Las sociedades árabes suelen parecer rígidas y reacias al cambio a los ojos de los de afuera, porque lo que ven son los regímenes que gobiernan en estos países, que en su mayoría sí se resisten al desarrollo y al cambio. Pero esta imagen prácticamente se opone a la realidad en las sociedades árabes, donde un enorme dinamismo está abriendo las puertas a muchos tipos de cambios, aunque sea en diferentes velocidades y en modos complejos y contradictorios –particularmente cuando el cambio desde abajo se frena desde arriba.

Consideremos a las mujeres árabes. La imagen predominante es de una mujer pasiva, exótica y cubierta por un velo que reacciona a los hechos en lugar de participar activamente en ellos. Es un objeto impersonal de estereotipos comunales que sostienen prejuicios culturales.

En realidad, las sociedades árabes están comprometidas en un proceso de cambio inmenso e irreversible en el que las mujeres desempeñan un papel crucial. Durante los últimos 50 años, una intensa urbanización y feminización de la fuerza laboral en todos los países árabes ha impulsado a las mujeres a la esfera pública a escala masiva.
