普林斯顿——穆斯林兄弟会和埃及的自由反对派都在严厉地批评美国。安妮·帕特森大使、约翰·克里国务卿和刚刚访问过开罗的威廉·伯恩斯副国务卿的日子也因此变得非常难过。但这恰恰证明美国正试图推行正确的政策。

美国正竭力避免支持特定的政党,而是支持奉行自由公正选举、尊重并听取少数族裔意见、维护个人权利等执政模式的自由民主观。但要想实现这一目标,必须勇敢地面对以色列和沙特阿拉伯。

两年半前曾经领导埃及革命的年轻人一直对美国持怀疑态度,因为美国曾在30年时间里支持前总统胡斯尼·穆巴拉克政权。从美国的角度看,革命爆发后奥巴马总统迅速放弃穆巴拉克转而支持民众,但开罗街头的民众却不这么看。很多埃及人认定穆斯林兄弟会的穆罕默德·穆尔西2012年当选总统背后肯定有美国的支持,因为他们无法想象美国会接受它不想要的结果。
