这是问题范围涉及极广。仅仅在美国,每年据估计有多达100,000个病人死于药物不良反应(ADR’s)。如果真是这样的话,药物引发的死亡数量将在引发死亡原因中(根据使用不同的死亡率估算法)排名第四或第五。此外,医院每年用于ADR’s的直接成本高达几百亿美元,这还不包括那些由ADR’s引起的住院治疗(或死亡)的费用。

我们必须看到测定病因和效果中的困难。判定一个病人的死亡或住院治疗是由于某一种药物还是潜在的疾病,或者是两者结合的作用,是十分困难的。但是这使得药物安全更为重要。
