KIGALI – No existe un mayor impedimento para el desarrollo económico a largo plazo de un país que la desnutrición infantil. Cuando un cuerpo en crecimiento no recibe las vitaminas y nutrientes esenciales, los efectos nocivos perduran hasta la edad adulta.

En los países de ingresos bajos, las dietas consisten principalmente de almidones, por ejemplo el arroz, y legumbres, por ejemplo los guisantes, que contienen muy poca proteína. Por esta razón, incluso un niño que tiene su estómago lleno no recibe necesariamente el equilibrio correcto de alimentos nutritivos y vitaminas que necesita para su desarrollo físico saludable.

Esto causa enormes consecuencias. Los niños desnutridos son más propensos a contraer enfermedades. De acuerdo con UNICEF (According to UNICEF), los niños que sufren de desnutrición severa tienen 9.5 veces más probabilidades de morir de diarrea y 6,4 veces más probabilidades de morir de neumonía. En su conjunto, una de cada tres muertes evitables entre los niños pequeños en todo el mundo – es decir hasta 2,5 millones de muertes cada año – sobreviene como resultado de una nutrición inadecuada.
