LONDON: Wir alle erinnern uns an eine Formulierung aus dem ersten Präsidentschaftswahlkampf eines Clinton.

Als sich Bill Clinton Anfang der 1990er Jahre um das Amt bewarb, erklärte einer seiner Mitarbeiter, was das zentrale Thema des Wahlkampfes sei: „It’s the economy, stupid.“, sagte er. Die Wirtschaft erklärt alles – Jobs, Preise, Häuser. Sie entscheidet über die Stimmung der Öffentlichkeit und bestimmt die politische Tagesordnung.

Bestätigt wird dieser Punkt durch eine seltsame Werbeanzeige, die Sie vielleicht kürzlich in einer Illustrierten gesehen haben. Geworben wird für teures Reisegepäck. Michail Gorbatschow sitzt auf dem Rücksitz einer Limousine. Er wird an der Berliner Mauer vorbeigefahren. Auf dem Sitz neben ihm steht die Ledertasche einer Luxusmarke. Die Botschaft? Wen kümmert die Mauer! Vergiss die Politik; was zählt, ist das Geld.
