La dura verdad sobre los santones de la India

NUEVA DELHI – A fines del mes pasado, cuando dos estados de la India y la capital nacional fueron asediados por turbas violentas que protestaban contra la condena dictada a su líder espiritual por violación de dos seguidoras menores de edad, los indios tuvieron que confrontar varias verdades dolorosas sobre el país.

El líder detrás de estas protestas es Gurmeet Singh, uno de los más destacados “godmen” (“hombres de Dios”), líderes espirituales autoproclamados que abundan en la India. Este santón llamativo y enjoyado se hace llamar Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan, una mezcla de nombres hindúes, musulmanes y sijs, seguidos por la palabra “humano” en hindi, punjabí y urdu. Y tiene fama de aprovecharse sexualmente de sus discípulas.

En 2002, dos de ellas reunieron el coraje necesario para acusarlo. En los 15 años y 200 audiencias que le tomó al tribunal llegar a una condena, los devotos de Singh no dejaron de presionar a los investigadores, a la policía, a los jueces y a las querellantes para que el caso se cerrara. Pero estos no se rindieron, y el mes pasado, Singh fue condenado a veinte años de prisión.
