弄巧反拙的“但是”

发自莫斯科——俄罗斯总理普京坚称“没有了正常的民主发展,就没有俄罗斯的未来。”正当我们这些俄罗斯人都在为这句开明言论而欢欣鼓舞之时,普京却在这句话后面补上了一句“但是……”,不仅削弱了原先那句话的力量,事实上,这句“但是……”令他的整个发言沦为了一堆空话。

自苏联时代末期以来,我们就对“但是”这个连词深恶痛绝。我们被告知说自由是好的,“但是”一个人是不能在一个缺乏共产主义国家意识的个人主义社会中生存的;我们被告知说民主是伟大的,“但是”只能服务于工人阶级的利益。

如今普京告诉我们说民主制度确实是优秀的制度,“但是”公众示威游行活动不能在医院这类公共区域附近举行。不过俄罗斯宪法可没规定医院属于禁止公众聚集的区域,更别说病人也是需要民主的。
