多年前,亚历山大·索尔仁尼琴(Alexander Solzhenitsyn)借用短语“保护人民”来形容俄罗斯的文化复兴。今天,这个短语以一种更为文学的方式运用于俄罗斯。

尽管我是一名物理学家,但是由于相信核毁灭的威胁还不如人口增长的生机勃勃给全球主要问题所带来的威胁严重,15年前我开始研究人口学。但是,我却认识到一个残酷的事实,即俄罗斯正面对着截然相反的问题:人口的剧减已经威胁到俄罗斯人生活的每一个层面。

其实,仅在过去十年中,虽然有成千上万的俄罗斯人从前苏联共和国归来,俄罗斯的人口还是下降了950万。某些地方自2000年开始出生率有所上升,现在约保持在每年150万,但是这比人口替代率还低了70,0000到80,0000人。
