Kořeny blízkovýchodní nedůvěry

DURHAM – Nedůvěru prostupující blízkovýchodní společnosti je těžké přehlédnout. Jak potvrzují řízené experimenty, Arabové podstatně méně důvěřují neznámým lidem, cizincům i krajanům, než třeba Evropané. To je na obtíž pokroku v mnoha směrech, od rozvoje obchodu po vládní reformy.

Společnosti s nízkou úrovní důvěry se neúměrně méně zapojují do mezinárodního obchodu a přitahují méně investic. A opravdu, podle šetření World Values Survey a souvisejícího výzkumu je důvěra mezi jednotlivci na Blízkém východě tak nízká, že zužuje obchodní transakce na ty, kdo se znají buď osobně, nebo přes společné známé. Arabové si často kvůli scházející důvěře nechají ujít potenciálně lukrativní příležitosti k výdělku skrze směnu.

Rovněž ve styku s veřejnými institucemi mají Arabové sklon vyhledávat zprostředkování osobou, k níž mají určitou osobní vazbu. K důsledkům patří nerovnost ohledně toho, co mohou lidé od takové instituce očekávat. To podrývá jejich efektivitu.
