2005年七月,数百万人参加了“Live 8”世界群星扶贫义演音乐会以支持非洲人民。同样是为了普通民众着想,非洲领导人在那年的夏天来到苏格兰会见了八国峰会领导人。全世界的许多人和组织发起了为了给非洲人们解除债务的福音2000运动。而2006年7月八国峰会的领导人在圣彼得堡再次确定了他们在一年前定下的雄心勃勃的目标,尽管他们并有作出进一步的行动。

在最近的大约一年半时间里,由世界领导人和坚定的活动家作出的要推动非洲发展的承诺取得了很大的进展。但是,人们有理由要问什么时候才能对非洲非人的贫困给出一个可持续的解决方案,不仅仅是依靠八国领导人和“Live 8”世界群星扶贫义演音乐会的组织者,而且要同样依靠非洲的领导人和及其人民。

非洲是一个充满矛盾的地方。它是地球上最富有的大洲之一,有着丰富的石油、宝石、森林、水、野生动物、土壤、耕地、农产品和众多的人口。然而非洲绝大部分的人民还生活在贫困之中。我不断地在问自己,“这到底是为什么?”
