NEW YORK – Der britische Künstler Damian Hirst sagte einmal über die Terroranschläge von 2011 auf das New Yorker World Trade Center, sie seien "in ihrer Art ein Kunstwerk. Teuflisch, aber genau ausgelegt für diese Art von visueller Wirkung." Heute, dreizehn Jahre später, kennt der Westen zwar die strategische Bedrohung des "Islamischen Staates" für den Nahen Osten, aber die visuellen Angriffe in den globalen Medien machen ihm zu schaffen.

Wie Osama bin Laden scheint der "Islamische Staat" genau zu wissen, welche Wirkung die schrecklichen Gewaltdarstellungen auf die Phantasie der Menschen haben. Es entbehrt nicht der Ironie, dass die Darstellung von Gewalt den Verboten des Islams von visueller Provokation in anderen Bereichen des Lebens widerspricht. Die Videos sind eine maßlose Provokation. Die sorgfältig inszenierten Darstellungen von Enthauptungen amerikanischer und britischer Journalisten sind in die westliche Psyche eingedrungen wie ein Algorithmus in das digitale Netzwerk des Gegners.

Diese Psyche ist eigentlich schon lange abgehärtet. Schockierende Bilder gehören zum Alltag. Aber jetzt ist die Schwäche der elektronischen Medien für Gewaltdarstellungen zu einer Stärke des IS geworden.
