一段时间以来,聪明人的圈子里时兴把无神论视为一种高人一等的教育、一种向更高程度演进的文明以及启蒙的标志。最新的畅销书籍提出,宗教信仰实际上是一种落后的标志,表明了陷于黑暗年代原始人还需要追赶上科学理性。我们被告知说,宗教造成了暴力、压迫、贫穷以及其他罪恶。

人们并不难以发现支持这些主张的证据。但是宗教能否成为一种好的势力呢?实际上,有没有这样的事例,也就是宗教信仰挽救了那些即使没有信仰的人呢?

由于我没有信仰某种宗教的好处和坏处,让我来为那些有宗教信仰的人辩护可能听起来有点伪善。但是,看到电视上的缅甸僧侣们不顾世界上最为压制政权的安全部队,人们就很难不看到宗教信仰的某些好处。缅甸是一个信仰深厚的国家,大多数男子都会出家一段时间。即使最为凶残的缅甸独裁者在杀戮身穿粟色和桔黄色僧袍的人之前也要三思。
