可现在打着预防气候变化、挽救地球的旗号,环保主义者正呼吁开展声势浩大的全球性运动,为减少化石燃料用量而砍伐并烧毁森林和灌木。如果不是可能付出破坏生物多样性、增加用水量和影响全球粮食产量等等惊人的代价,我们或许可以将这种现象当作怪异的讽刺而一笑了之。增加全球二氧化碳排放量是另一个可能的结果。

一提到可再生能源,多数人会想到太阳能电池板和风力发电机。但在全球范围内,太阳能和风能仅占可再生能源总量的一小部分——2010年还不到7%。水力资源占比更大,达到17%。但最最重要的无疑是生物燃料——这种人类最古老的燃料占当前可再生能源总量的76%及能源总量的10%。其中60%是近三十亿尚未用上现代燃料的人所使用的木材、树枝和牛粪,这些燃料导致严重空气污染和数百万人死亡。
