重塑科学教育

温哥华——尽管科学在现代社会的作用越来越大,科学教育对大多数人来讲仍然是遥远和次要的话题。这种情况既短视也非常危险。归根结底,科学和技术不仅是现代经济发展的首要驱动力,也越来越在许多重要的公共政策,特别是与气候变化和医疗卫生相关的问题上成为一种核心力量。

可以肯定的是,对更多更好科学教育的需求并没有被完全忽视。但人们的注意力却很少集中在大学科学教育,这也是有切实数据表明在不花费巨额代价的条件下如何取得重要进展的唯一一个教育层次。不仅如此,除非在大学阶段制定更高的科学教育标准,否则将很难在小学和中学阶段取得更大的进步。

传统的观念是大学科学教育并不存在多大问题。科学家和工程师的培养速度可以与过去相提并论,尽管很少有非科学专业的学生认为科学必修课有意思或有用处,人们也普遍认为这与科学本身的特性相关。
