Die Power von Teenagermädchen

LAGOS – Wenn wir an Mädchen im Teenageralter denken, kommen uns sofort die üblichen Klischees in den Sinn, vom „gemeinen Mädchen” bis hin zur schlecht gelaunten Gymnasiastin, die sich in ihrem Zimmer verbarrikadiert. In Wahrheit gehören Mädchen im Teenageralter nicht nur zu einer Gruppe, die auf der ganzen Welt marginalisiert wird, sie haben auch ein praktisch unerreichtes Potenzial, für alle eine bessere Zukunft aufzubauen.

Es ist nun einmal so, dass Mädchen in diesem Alter die Kontrolle über ihr eigenes Schicksal üblicherweise entzogen wird. Mehr als 32 Millionen der Ärmsten unter ihnen gehen zurzeit nicht zur Schule. Jeden Tag heiraten 39.000 Mädchen unter 18. Für eine große Anzahl Mädchen auf der ganzen Welt ist der Gedanke, sie könnten selbst darüber bestimmen, ob sie schwanger werden wollen oder nicht, ein unerfüllbarer Traum.

Diese Situation ist moralisch verwerflich, gesellschaftlich sinnlos und wirtschaftlich unvernünftig. Wenn wir das Problem lösen, können wir nicht nur Millionen von Kinder schützen, sondern auch einer der größten Herausforderungen begegnen, vor der die Welt heute steht.
